rhythm interpretation Experience with cardiac drips, insulin drips,
and heparin drips Experience with peritoneal dialysis preferred
Peripheral IV skills Experience with bipaps, high flow oxygen, and
multiple oxygen delivery systems Experience with stroke and
post-cardiac catheterization care Experience with tube feedings and
NG/Dobhoff tubes Description: The unit has 34 beds with a
patient-to-nurse ratio of 1:4 to 1:5 on days and 1:5 to 1:6 on
nights. There are 3 techs available when full. The type of
equipment used includes bipaps, high flow oxygen, Vapotherm, Alaris
pumps, cardiac drips, heparin drips, insulin drips, and wound vacs
alongside wound care. The documentation system utilized is
Meditech. Scheduling requires working every other weekend. Floating
may occur between PCU units or to medical-surgical floors. Patient
experience requirements include hourly rounding on days and every
2-hour rounding on nights, following AIDET, and maintaining
communication boards. The department has TV communication boards.
Advanced skills such as ACLS are necessary. Procedures performed on
the unit include peritoneal dialysis, thoracentesis, paracentesis,
chest tube insertions, Dobhoff/NG tube insertions, and central line
dressing changes. Troubleshooting of wound vacs is also part of the
role. The unit practices self-scheduling with a 4-week schedule
cycle. Travelers often extend their contracts after the initial
assignment. The culture on the unit emphasizes caring for patients
like family and promotes great teamwork.
